How Many Immigrant MDs Are Sitting in U.S. Prisons? The Numbers are Staggering

In Frankfort Kentucky last week still another immigrant physician was convicted of insurance fraud and will spend the next years 5 years in state prison.

Dr Ezekiel Akande

I didn’t do the work, but I deserve to get paid anyway. After all, I’m a doctor

According to State Attorney General Andy Beshear,  Doctor Ezekiel O. Akande, a resident of Somerset, was sentenced last week by Pulaski Circuit Court Judge David A. Tapp. Akande was found guilty in a jury trial in March for Medicaid Fraud and Theft, of more than $10,000.

Investigators discovered that Akande, age 58, operated a clinic called the  Somerset Regional Pain Center. He was arrested and went to trial for illegally and routinely billing the Kentucky Medicaid program for smokers treatment sessions that he never performed. In addition to his prison sentence, was also ordered to repay the $10,000 he stole.

Akande immigrated to the U.S. from Nigeria after attending medical school at the University of Ibadan.

It’s time to take another look at foreign physicians, not that native born M.D.s represent any kind of moral high ground. My wife had to insist that the X-rays her Indian doctor billed Medicare for were never performed and should be removed from the bill.
I have no verifiable statistics, but sexual assaults and Medicare fraud do appear to be disproportionately attributable to foreign born physicians.
As a retired hospital pharmacist I am very much aware of the danger presented by a foreign physician with only a passing knowledge of English. An inability to write clear and precise orders can be very dangerous, and language subtleties are lost on some of them.

    • Ron –

Over the past 18 years we’ve been fortunate enough to have our stories picked up by Dateline, 20/20 and 60 minutes. But try as we might, we have been unsuccessful in getting even one of their producers to be willing to even discuss the matter of criminal immigrant MDs.

We have in our files over 400 of these cases – all since 1998 – including the likes of Visu Vilvarajah, who immigrated to the U.S.; Murdered both his wife and her mother by shooting them in the face; served a few years in prison and then was REISSUED his medical license.

We have yet to find any major news source willing to explore this jaw-dropping subject.

Thanks for your very interesting observations.
