The story, billed as “Obsession in the Lone Star State,” comes about two weeks after Thomas Dixon, the Amarillo plastic surgeon accused of hiring David Neal Shepard to kill Sonnier, was convicted by a Lubbock jury on two counts of capital murder. Dixon was sentenced to life in prison without parole after a three-week trial.
Shepard entered a no contest plea in September 2013 in exchange for a sentence of life without parole.
A preview of the episode, which describes the case as a “sinister tale of obsession, revenge and unrequited love,” shows interviews with Sonnier’s family and Lubbock police Detective Zach Johnson, who led the investigation.
This is the fourth Medical Miscreant story aired by NBC since 2012 and we are indebted to Dateline producer Liz Cole.
