Virginia MD: Long History of Drug Pushing = Short Stay in Prison. What Else is New?

Dr Nibedita Mohanty

Dr Nibedita Mohanty

A Stafford County physician who confessed last February to being a prescription drug dealer, was sentenced to 4 years in state prison this week in Alexandria Federal Court.

Doctor Nibedita Mohanty, age 56, was found guilty on two counts of Illegal Drug Distribution and one count of Healthcare Fraud. A stunning number of other charges were dropped on condition of a pretrial plea agreement. The charges could have resulted in a 50-year term, but Federal Prosecutor Gene Rossi and defense attorney Peter Greenspun agreed to a three-to-seven year range.

Mohanty, who was the Stafford Hospital Chief of Medicine for the 5-year period prior to her arrest in March 2013, was the subject of an extended investigation by the Stafford Sheriff’s Department and federal investigators.

Detectives discovered that Mohanty was distributing a number of different prescription narcotics to numerous people with no medical need for the drugs. According to police records, Mohanty routinely supplied narcotics to anybody who asked for them. Witnesses testified they could get any prescription they wanted for $250 cash. She admitted that she often supplied drugs to people she knew were street dealers themselves. Her narcotics of choice were OxyContin, Percocet and Dilaudid.

Mohanty was also in the habit of routinely over-prescribing narcotics for patients who suffered chronic pain. Some patients received prescriptions for as many as 10,000+ pills over two-year periods.

One of the people, Veronica M. Wentzel of King George County, overdosed and died from the drugs she obtained from Mohanty.

The wayward doctor was originally indicted on 93 criminal charges, 90 of which were dropped after federal authorities took charge of the case.

Our Observations:

Nibedita Mohanty was born and raised in India. She emigrated to the U.S. and – as countless thousands of other foreign-born students – was gifted with an American medical education – in her case, the Virginia Commonwealth University School Of Medicine. She graduated in 1986 and within 20 years learned that U.S. healthcare provides terrific opportunities for cash scams and under-the-table physician crime.

As we say: nothing new.
