“Sometimes people try to expose what’s wrong with you because they can’t handle everything that’s right about you.” (Kelly Ecker wrote this on her Facebook page, four months before her murder)

In the city of Terra Haute nurse Kelly Ecker married Doctor George “Scott” Sampson last October. According to witnesses who attended the reception, the bride and groom started arguing almost immediately after the ceremony. In the hours following the formal reception a smaller group of family and friends gathered for a post-reception party at the couple’s home, where the guests became uncomfortably aware that the tension between the couple was getting worse. So no one could be too surprised when not long after the last guest had left for the evening. the bride started calling 911.

According to Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, Nurse Kelly Ecker, age 50, had actually dialed 911 three times around 1:15 in the morning, in desperate calls for help. She told the police dispatcher that her husband had beaten her and was threatening to do so again. But by the time police got to the home the bride and groom lay dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the murder-suicide occurred at about 1:30 a.m.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom said, “Kelly was shot multiple times in the chest and head with a 45-caliber handgun. Her husband was found in another part of the house with a single wound to the head.”

Doctor Ecker’s 10-year-old son found his mother’s body. An elderly female relative in the home at the time of the shootings was also unharmed.

The body of Samson, age 54, was found near a gun safe in the basement with self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sampson had worked as an anesthesiologist in the surgery department at Union Hospital. Kelly Sampson worked there, too, as a registered nurse in the ICU.
