Dr James Francis Murphy

A doctor in the North County city of Encinitas was sentenced this week to 48 months in federal prison.

Doctor James F. Murphy, age 53, was found guilty after prosecutors were able to prove that he and his wife had been running numerous scams, with the sole purpose of obstructing the Internal Revenue Service from collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Investigators revealed that Murphy brought in as much as $1,000,000 annually from osteopathic clinics in California and Nebraska, yet paid no federal income taxes for more than 10 years. Instead of accurately declaring income and paying taxes lawfully owed, and in spite repeated warnings by the IRS, the Murphys decided to file false income tax returns for both their medical practice and personal finances, concealing their true income, according to court records.

Doctor Murphy, who owned and operated a pair of clinics called Cornerstone Progressive Health, was sentenced Tuesday to four years in federal prison and ordered to repay $500,000.

His wife, Denise Christine Murphy, age 52, was sentenced to 1 year house arrest and ordered to repay $148,000.

According to a federal press release, when the doctor was confronted by the IRS, he lied and told investigators that he and his wife were not U.S. citizens and insisted that tax laws did not apply to them.

We decided to call the Encinitas Cornerstone office today. Their number is 760 402 4028. The doctor was not in.

Dr. Murphy is an awesome doctor! More likely his greedy wife was the guilty party here.

That wasn’t his wife speaking, so I wouldn’t be too quick to give this lab coat twit a free pass. By all things measurable, he knew exactly what was going on.
