Deanna Ballman’s body was discovered in her car on a country road on Aug. 1, 2012. It was the day after she had called her mother to say she was answering a Craigslist ad to clean a house.

In Delaware Ohio the doctor accused of Rape and Murder of a pregnant woman last year has confessed to “causing her death and the death of her unborn child.”

Doctor Ali Salim, a 45-year-old psychiatrist, told the court that he acknowledged prosecutors “had enough evidence” to convict him of committing the crimes – thus, he avoided a criminal trial that could have resulted in a death penalty.

Salim, who was 44 at the time of his arrest, had been working as an emergency room doctor. Investigators learned that he was in the habit of running Craigslist ads to invite female sexual partners to his home, then trading heroin for sex. Many of the women were young, drug-addicted prostitutes who testified they were drugged against their will and sexually assaulted.

Although there was no indication Deanna Ballman was addicted to drugs, that is exactly the scenario that detectives believe led to the murder of the 23-year-old. Ballman died of a fatal heroin overdose that Salim injected into her thigh at his home in a wealthy central Ohio neighborhood. Her body was discovered in the backseat of her car in the woods not far from Salim’s home.

The doctor admitted that he had secretly filmed himself having sex with the unconscious woman – who was nine months pregnant – and after she stopped breathing, he placed her body in the car and drove it to a field several miles away.

Delaware County Judge Duncan Whitney sentenced Salim to 36 years in state prison.

Our Observations:

Salim, who graduated from Pakistan’s King Edward Medical College in 1993, was working at a hospital in Knox County until he was suspended when the case hit the newscasts.
