In the city of Newark a family medicine practitioner has been convicted in a widespread medical laboratory patient referral scam.
According to U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman, Doctor Joel Fischgrund, age 60, changed his ‘not guilty’ plea to ‘guilty’ last Monday, in a case of accepting bribe money from a company which called itself Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services. Fischgrund admitted in federal court that he was paid $1,500 a month for an illegal agreement with the Parsippany medical lab for referring patients’ blood specimens.
Court records show that 10 other doctors have already been convicted in the same medical fraud scheme involving Biodiagnostic Laboratory. The conspiracy involved an estimated $100,000,000 in payments to the lab from insurance payers, and several million dollars in bribery cash to the criminal doctors.
U.S. agents report they have recovered at least $7,000,000 million so far, according to attorney Paul Fishman.
Fischgrund MD could be sentenced to five years in federal prison when he faces Judge Stanley Chesler in U.S. District Court in Newark, on April 1.

For the past 25 years, the tiny state of New Jersey has consistently ranked in the top 5 in generating doctors committing felony-level crimes. We find this very interesting.
Of course, few of these run-of-the-mill lab coat lunatics can match the mental midgetry of doctor Amed Rashed, who amputated a dead man’s hand; took it to a topless bar to impress an exotic dancer he wanted to bed.*
What New Jersey lacks in size has never stopped that state from generating off-the-chart medical chutzpah with its never-ending litany of physician nut-cases.
