A Philadelphia-area physician in the middle of a huge drug distribution ring has been convicted of more than 300 felonies.
Doctor Norman Werther, age 73, who lives in the city of Horsham, is expected to receive an automatic 20-year federal prison term. This doctor’s jaw-dropping volume of crimes include the following:
> 184 counts of Narcotic Distribution
> 116 counts of Money-laundering
> Six counts of Conspiracy
During the trial, the prosecution was able to prove that Werther played a key role in the distribution of thousands of bogus oxycodone prescriptions, including those abused by a so-called patient named Nathaniel Backes, who was found dead of a drug overdose in his home.
Investigators learned that Werther operated a physical therapy clinic in the town of Willow Grove, where fake patients were recruited in large numbers for fake examinations. People paid $150 per clinic visit. Werther would then write prescriptions for no true medical reason, and these prescriptions were either filled, or sold on the streets. Detectives discovered that many of the drugs were turned over to other drug dealers for resale on the street.
Authorities believe that between February 2009 and August 2011, the drug trafficking brought in $5,000,000 from more than 700,000 pills.
Werther is out on bail pending his sentencing date.
