In the city of Phoenix a 50-year old physician with no real training in surgery has been convicted of killing three of his patients in grossly incompetent operations.
Dr Peter Normann
Doctor Peter J. Normann of Anthem, was found guilty of two counts of Second-Degree Murder following the deaths of Leslie A. Ray, age 53 of Blythe, California, and Ralph Gonzalez, age 33, of Scottsdale. He was also convicted of Manslaughter in the death of Alicia S. Blanco, age 41, of Gilbert.
According to prosecutor Jeannette Gallagher, Normann, a certified internist, had no formal training in either cosmetic surgery or anesthesiology. And within a period of 14 months in 2006 and 2007, he managed to overdose two of his patients on anesthesia during liposuction, and kill yet another by accidentally inject fat into a blood vessel during surgery.
The Maricopa County Superior Court jury heard testimony from numerous witnesses, including Paramedic David Duarte, whose EMS team was first to arrive at Normann’s office, and attempt to save the life of Ralph Gonzalez.
Duarte was also the first medical professional to report the “dangerous incompetence” of the doctor, who had none of the standard surgical equipment, and had failed to properly insert an airway into the patient. “The doctor was pumping air into the patient’s stomach, instead of his lungs,” Duarte said. “And then he argued with us when we insisted on taking over the emergency.”
Training? I don’t need no stinking training. I’m smart.
In testimony, Paramedic Duarte told the jury, “I told Doctor Normann if he didn’t let go of the patient’s airway and let me correctly reinsert it, I was going to break his arm.”
Health Care Reform? Don’t talk about this stuff
Prosecutor Jeannette Gallagher informed the court that Normann had attempted to “reinvent himself as a cosmetic surgeon, had undergone a mere six days of training in liposuction,” and would actually use his janitor, his mother or a massage therapist to assist him during surgeries. “He had no nursing staff; no anesthesiologist; no proper medical equipment in case something went wrong.”
* * *
So three innocent people are dead; several dozen more reporting long-term injuries, and the monstrously arrogant Peter Normann, MD is sentenced to 25 years in prison. That’s ugly.
In court, medical maniac Normann had the nerve to say this. “It’s my belief that the public at large is not truly aware of the risks of cosmetic surgery.”
Truer words have never been spoken, doc. Which is why the following steps by you should have been a ‘no brainer.”
1. Learn how to do the job before you “practice” medicine.
2. Hire professional nurses to keep you from killing patients.
3. Don’t include the janitor on your surgical team.
Better yet, be smarter than a 5th grader before you put on a lab coat.
