In Portland Oregon, a physician has been convicted of sexually abusing patients as they lay helpless under surgical anesthesia, and was sentenced to 23 years in prison Tuesday, according to court records.
Dr. Frederick G. Field, a 46-year-old anesthesiologist, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of sexual abuse and one count of rape. Field had originally pleaded not guilty to the charges he had sexually abused at least seven women. The Oregon Medical Board suspended his license at that time.
Field worked on staff at the Mid Columbia Medical Center in the Dalles. According to the Wasco County District Attorney’s Office, six different women tesified he touched their genitals or breasts, and forced them to touch him, while they were incapacitated by medication. One woman reported that Field forced her to have sexual intercourse in 2008. Investigators believe the crimes started in September, 2007.
Hospital officials said one of the patients reported the sexual abuse in May, 2011. The hospital began an internal investigation and then notified The Dalles Police Department.
Leslie Wolf, chief deputy D.A. in Wasco County, reported that “Field is not eligible for early release. He will have to register as a sex offender, and can have no contact with any of the victims and their families.”
Additionally, Wolf said, Field must “pay five million dollars in restitution to the victims for counseling expenses.”
Doctor Field earned his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1998. State medical board records indicate he completed his anesthesiology residency training at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
