In greater-Birmingham, Alabama, a doctor has admitted to plundering insurance providers for more than $1 million over the last five years.
Doctor Diana K. McCutcheon, age 55, pleaded guilty Wednesday to multiple counts of Health Care Fraud and Wire Fraud. The charges involved billing Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare for hundreds of cosmetic skin procedures that are not covered by insurance.
McCutcheon, who operated clinics in Lexington and Elgin, was discovered to have been billing insurance providers for laser skin treatments, and then deliberately miscoding them as more far serious skin lesions. Investigators stated none of her patients were aware of the criminal practices.
The doctor is scheduled to be sentenced March 11, 2013. Health Care Fraud carries a sentence of up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine. Wire fraud carries a sentence of up to 20 years and a $250,000 fine.
